north americaN school of internet governance
Hybrid Format
A two and a half days summit of lectures and discussion about emerging technologies and cybersecurity and Its impact on Internet governance
The North American School of Internet Governance School (NASIG) is an in-depth capacity building event that focuses on teaching the development and application of the shared principles, norms, rules, policies, decision-making procedures and organizations that shape the evolution and use of the Internet. Additionally, NASIG seeks to empower the next generation of Internet leaders.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the Internet has been the primary platform to keep the World connected. The sectors in charge of guaranteeing a secure, stable, interoperable, and continuous access have managed to meet the demand. However, the pandemic has uncovered the evidence: "not everyone is connected." Other natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, typhoons, etc.) have exacerbated the situation. New technologies have evolved and brought new digital platforms to the end user, generating controversial discussions in the Internet Governance ecosystem. Recent geopolitical conflicts have exacerbated the fragmentation ('splinternet') of the Internet, which has promoted various responses among the community.
This year's theme - Emerging Technologies and Cybersecurity: Impact on Internet Governance - will focus on the impact of emerging technologies on privacy, cybersecurity, and law enforcement issues, among other things. We will explore the influence that NFTs, Blockchain, and Metaverse platforms have on the Domain Name System (DNS) and the implications for DNS abuse and Internet governance. How these issues influence norms, regulations, policies, and the future of the Internet and its services will be explored.
NASIG 2022 allows participants to learn from experts, clarify Internet governance concepts and realize the impact of some of the new technologies and cyber threats on these. This year the school will be held in a hybrid* format from November 2nd thru 4th, 2022, at the EDP University facilities in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
A few fellowships will be available and restricted to residents from Canada, United States (mainland), and Puerto Rico.
We encourage everyone to review our list of resources under References to get background information on this year's theme.
